Our Projects
PROJECT 1

Early in the 1970s, the members of the Junior Woman's Club of Columbia (JWC) were making themselves aware of the unique needs of children in stressful home environments.
The club's Search Committee began to study the situation and possible areas of service the club could offer. The tragic stories of abused children presented through the news media as well as special appeals from state and local authorities indicated the lack of emergency shelters for abused and neglected children in the community.
In June 1976, a special meeting of the club was called, and the membership voted unanimously for its new project, Youth Resources.
From this vote came the creation of Palmetto Place Emergency Children's Shelter. A local shelter that has served in the community to take in and support many innocent young children who have experienced traumatic events, abuse, neglect and give them hope and security.
Our mission is to support Palmetto Place in all facets. Our members stay active with the children, the caregivers and our group donates through numerous fundraising events to help provide financial stability to the shelter.

COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS

Our members each year not only support the mission to support Palmetto Place Children's Shelter, they also dedicate their time and service to many community service projects including:
-
Arts
-
Cancer Awareness
-
Conservation
-
Education
-
Home Life
-
Public Affairs
-
International Outreach
-
Mental Health Awareness
Each Community Service Program Committee Chair highlights current events and invites members to participate in various community service events during the club season. We're proud to have supported many local organizations in their missions to improve the community.
Most recently, as a part of our Cancer Awareness Program, we were able to spread some holiday joy by partnering with the Chapin JWC and Aun & McKay to hold our annual Christmas Party at the Pediatric Oncology Unity at Prisma Health Children's Hospital.
